Q. What is the difference between Academic HealthPlans (AHP) and Aetna?

A. Aetna is the actual provider of insurance coverage. AHP is the company that manages the Texas Tech University student insurance contract. 

Q. I am needing to see a provider, how can I view providers who are in network with AHP's insurance? 

A. Visit AHP website and follow these steps when you need to choose an in network provider. 

-Select 'Domestic' if you are from the United States. Select 'International' if you are from anywhere else. 

-under 'Quick Links' click 'Find a Doctor, Print an ID Card'.

- click 'Find a doctor, hospital or pharmacy'.

- Select option 1 to find providers in network and click on 'Find a network provider'.

- You can then sign in as a member or continue as a guest. If you are living on campus and want a place nearby use the zip code 79430. If you are living off campus please use your current zip code. 

-Under the heading 'Student Health Medical Plans' select 'Open Choice PPO'.

-Select the type of provider you are wanting to see. 

 Q. What if I need to see a specialist? 

A. Specialists require a referral from a physician to utilize their services. If you are interested in visiting a specialist you can go to your local primary care physician or provider and ask them about being referred to a specialist. Some speciality referrals are not covered under the AHP plan. To find out more information please call AHP at 1.877.480.4161. 

Q. What if I need surgery? 

A. If you should need surgery it would require a referral from a physician to utilize their services. For all surgery a physician will need to determine if or when you may need surgery. Many times surgery can be covered under your AHP plan if it is medically necessary. To find out more information please call AHP at 1.877.480.4161.

Q. What if I have an emergency on the weekend or holiday? 

A. Use the above list to find all in network providers. Many are open on the weekend and some have holiday hours as well.
