Remember This

Remember This is an applied arts exploration of early-stage dementia. This short film weaves together dance and storytelling to reflect on experiences of caregivers and their loved ones with dementia. Moments of hope, humor, and tenderness ask us: what would you want to remember?
This film adapts and expands upon a live performance of the same title, created based on interviews with people living with dementia and their caretakers and the lived experiences of the artists. The film is part of a larger project researching the impact of the arts in dementia disease perceptions, stigma, and manageability. Looking at data collected through surveys administered after watching the live performance and the film online, the project will consider not only impact of applied arts, but also each modality of storytelling.

What is applied performance?
Applied performance uses performing arts tools to solve problems outside the theatre. Theatre, dance, and music have therapeutic benefits for both artists and audiences. The performing arts also communicate nuanced information in effective and efficient ways. Applied performance can occur in a variety of forms, ranging from standardized patient performance in medical training to Shakespeare performed for and by incarcerated populations. Live performances of Remember This affected audiences in statistically significant ways, increasing awareness and decreasing stigma of memory disease. The interactive website and film seek to broaden the reach of this applied performance.
