Exemptions and Waivers

Student Business Services processes the Exemptions and Waivers for Texas Tech University. Click on the links below to see THECB descriptions. TTU requirements are listed under each link. Exemptions and waivers must be turned in to SBS by the 12th class day in Fall/Spring and the 4th class day in summer terms. (OP.62.13)

Please note that exemptions are not considered payment under state payment guidelines. A student who does not yet have the exemption applied to their account may still be subject to cancellation if they fail to meet the state payment requirements.

  • Exemptions are a type of financial assistance allowing some Texas residents to attend a public college or university in Texas without paying tuition or, in some cases, tuition and fees.
  • Adopted Students Formerly in Foster or Other Residential Care

    TTU requirement: Student must provide to SBS a certification letter from the Department of Family and Protective Services (TDFPS), of eligibility. Exemption name on student account: Adopted Foster Care Exemption
  • Blind/Deaf Student Exemption Program

    TTU requirement: Receive certification letter from Department of Assistive and Rehabilitative Services from the qualified student.
    Exemption name on student account: Blind Exemption, Deaf Exemption
  • Children of Disabled or Deceased Firemen, Peace Officers, Game Wardens, and Employees of Correctional Institutions

    TTU requirement: Receive the certification from the TX. Higher Education Coordinating Board. Exemption name on student account is:
    Dep Disabled Fireman Exempt
  • Combat Exemption for Children of Military Service Members

    TTU requirement: This program has been discontinued by the State of Texas. However, Texas Tech will continue to honor the Combat Exemption for students already receiving the exemption. To maintain eligibility for the Combat Exemption, the student must maintain continuous enrollment at TTU and provide proof of the service member's deployment to a combat zone each semester. No new students will be granted the Combat Exemption unless the State of Texas reactivates the program.
    The Combat Exemption covers the student's tuition only. Fees and other incidental charges such as housing, meal and parking charges are the student's responsibility to pay by the University's official payment deadlines each semester.
    Qualifying proof of deployment includes military orders, pay records or other official documents that indicate the service member is deployed to a combat zone. Students may also request documentation from the National Personnel Records Center at (314) 801-0800 or by writing:

  • Early High School Graduation Scholarship

    This program has been discontinued by the State of Texas.
  • Educational Aide Exemption

    This program has been discontinued by the State of Texas. However, Texas Tech will continue to honor the Educational Aide Exemption for students already receiving the exemption. To maintain eligibility for the Educational Aide Exemption, the student must maintain continuous enrollment at TTU and provide proof of employment as an educational aide each semester. No new students will be granted the Educational Aide Exemption unless the State of Texas reactivates the program.
    The Educational Aide Exemption covers the student's tuition and mandatory fees only. All other fees and incidental charges such as housing, meal and parking charges are the student's responsibility to pay by the University's official payment deadlines each semester.
  • Exemption for Highest Ranking High School Graduate

    TTU requirement: Student must provide SBS a copy of their Highest Ranking High School Graduate Certificate from their high school. (Valedictorian Certificate)Name of exemption on student account: Valedictorian Exemption
  • Exemption for Peace Officers Disabled in the Line of Duty

    TTU requirement: SBS must receive from the student a certification letter from the student's prior employer with the date verifying such event that makes the student eligible for exemption. Name of exemption on student account: Disabled Peace Officer
  • Exemption for Students under Conservatorship of the Dept. of Family and Protective Services

    TTU requirement: Student must provide to SBS a certification letter from the Department of Family and Protective Services (TDFPS), of eligibility. Name of exemption on student account: Foster Care Exemption
  • Exemption for the Surviving Spouse and Dependent Children of Certain Deceased Public Servants (Employees)

    TTU requirement: SBS must receive from the student a certification letter from the deceased parent's prior employer with the date and parents name verifying such event that makes the student eligible for exemption. Name of exemption on student account: Dep. of Fallen Public Servant
  • Exemption Program for Clinical Preceptors and Their Children

    TTU requirement: SBS must receive the Application for an Exemption through the Exemption for Clinical Preceptors and their Children. The application must also include a copy of the written preceptor agreement to be accepted.

  • Exemptions for Texas Veterans (Hazelwood Exemption)

    TTU requirement: Student must apply and provide documentation to the Office of Military and Veteran Programs of their eligibility. The Office of Military and Veteran Programs will notify SBS to apply the exemption to the student account.

  • Military: Exemptions for Texas Veterans (Hazelwood Exemption)

    TTU requirement: Student must apply and provide documentation to the Office of Military and Veteran Programs of their eligibility. The Office of Military and Veteran Programs will notify SBS to apply the exemption to the student account.

  • Military: Orphans of Texas Members of the U.S. Armed Forces or National Guard

    TTU requirement: Student must apply and provide documentation to the Office of Military and Veteran Programs of their eligibility. The Registrar's Office will notify SBS to apply the exemption to the student account.

  • Firefighters Taking Fire Science Courses

    TTU requirement: SBS must receive on company letter head, proof of employment as a paid fire fighter from the student. The student must enroll in the courses of a Fire Science Curriculum.

  • Senior Citizen, 55 or Older, Tuition Reduction Program

    TTU requirement: Student must be 55 years old prior to or on the 12th class day of the term (4th class day for Summer Sessions). SBS will identify qualifying students. No action is necessary by the student; however, please allow overnight processing to take place in order for benefits to apply.
  • Senior Citizen, 65 or Older, Free Tuition for 6 Credit Hours

    TTU requirement: Student must be 65 years old prior to or on the 12th class day of the term (4th class day for Summer Sessions). SBS will identify qualifying students. No action is necessary by the student; however, please allow overnight processing to take place in order for benefits to apply.
  • TANF Exemption Program (Processed by Third Party Analyst)

    This program has been discontinued by the State of Texas.
