International Textile Center unveils new lab
Texas Tech University's International Textile Center laboratory complex recently added an additional 5,500-square-feet of laboratory space, according to program officials. With the new elbow room, all high-volume, heat-producing instruments for testing fibers and yarns at the research facility were relocated to the new space, and today the expanded laboratory is fully functional.
The new lab with its large, contiguous space enables more rigorous controls over sample conditioning, and more efficient flows of materials to be tested, officials said.
Reconfigured. The space in which the Materials Evaluation Laboratory was located is being reconfigured to house instrumentation for evaluating the structural/molecular properties of fibers and polymers. That laboratory is operating on a limited basis and will be fully developed in the next few months, officials said.
Located on the outskirts of Lubbock on East Loop 289, the 110,000-square-foot International Textile Center has a central goal of fulfilling the charge of the Texas Technological College 1923 Charter to provide "a hub of excellence in the study of natural fibers and textiles."
Merged. Last December the center merged with Texas Tech's Department of Plant and Soil Science, following approval of the Texas Board of Higher Education. The facility retains its name and its operations continue to be led by Managing Director Dean Ethridge.
