Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo sets TTU Day for March 15
One of Texas Tech University's College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources most generous supporters, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, will feature a TTU Day and Reception on March 15 in Houston. The show itself runs March 3-22.
Over the years some 826 Rodeo Scholars have attended Texas Tech with direct rodeo scholarships valued at some $5.1 million. This year alone 135 undergraduates and four graduate students from CASNR were awarded scholarships from the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.
Today, the endowment principle is over $1.5 million with $577,000 in research funding and $857,050 in assistantships and fellowships
Scholarships. Since presenting the first scholarship in 1957, officials said the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo has committed more than $100 million in educational support to more than 20,000 Texas students. Annually, it dedicates $8.4 million to scholarships and educational programs.
The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo began in 1932. With approximately 19,000 volunteers serving on 98 different committees, the show hosts almost 2 million visitors each year. In 75 years, the charitable organization has committed more than $220 million to the youth of Texas. Its economic impact exceeds $345 million in the Houston metropolitan area, and nearly $387 million worldwide.
Ranked consistently among world's largest rodeos""in events, entertainers and spectators""the Houston Rodeo a true slice of Americana. Kicking off the event on March 1 is one of Houston's most popular events, the Downtown Rodeo Parade.
Concerts. Meanwhile, officials said this year's featured concerts include Alan Jackson, Big & Rich, Brad Paisley, Brooks & Dunn, Clay Walker, Dierks Bentley, Duelo, Faith Hill, Fergie, Hannah Montana, John Fogerty, John Legend, Kevin Fowler, Martina Mcbride, Miley Cyrus, Miranda Lambert, Pat Green, Rascal Flatts, Sugarland, Tim McGraw, and Toby Keith.
The Houston Rodeo is also home to the World's Championship Bar-B-Que Contest, which runs Feb. 28 - March 1 and often draws as hundreds of grill masters.
