Rigby presented Texas Wildlife Society's Cottam Award
A master's graduate student from Texas Tech University's Department of Natural Resources Management received first place honors Feb. 15 in the Texas Chapter of The Wildlife Society's Clarence Cottam Award Competition in San Antonio.
Beth Rigby (right) placed at the top of 10 entries selected from submitted abstracts in the annual competition, which is devoted to promoting excellence in student research. Her presentation was titled, "Survival, habitat use, and movements of mottled ducks on the upper Texas Gulf Coast."
The Delaware native, who serves as a research assistant in the Texas Tech department, received her bachelor's degree from the University of Virginia and is currently conducting field research on the Texas Gulf coast.
Renowned Conservationist. Cottam, a renowned conservationist and ornithologist, was the first director of Welder Wildlife Foundation and an assistant director of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The foundation's museum and collections feature 1,400 species of flowering plants, 430 species of birds, 55 species of reptiles and amphibians and 55 species of mammals.
The foundation came into being upon the death of Rob Welder in 1954. In his will, Welder established the foundation on 7,800 acres of prime wildlife habitat adjacent to the Aransas River in northern San Patricio County.
Sustained Diversity. The awards banquet, which honored Rigby, was part of the 43rd Annual Conference of the Texas Chapter of The Wildlife Society, which also featured a President's Reception, Student Breakfast, and Past Presidents' Luncheon.
The Texas Chapter was formed in 1965 and is designed to involve resource professionals and stimulate involvement by all concerned individuals. Officials said the vision of the organization was to assure a sustained diversity of wildlife and their habitats in Texas.
