Landscape architecture students take high Texas ASLA honors
Students from Texas Tech University's Department of Landscape Architecture garnered the majority of undergraduate-division awards at an annual conference for Texas landscape architects.
Texas Tech students won four of seven awards when the Texas Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects met April 4 in Fort Worth. University of Texas students collected the other three.
Winners were:
" Colleen Price, a senior from Burlington: Merit Award-Research/Undergraduate; "A Non-Traditional View of the ASLA's Environmental Code of Ethics;" Yucatan, Mexico." Jared Ferguson, a junior from Buffalo, and Laramie Coggan, a junior from Midland: Merit Award-General Design/Undergraduate; "East Student Union Building;" Lubbock, Texas." Kellen Green, a senior from Archer City, and Lonnie Hill, a junior from Carrollton: Merit Award-General Design/Undergraduate; "Student Union Building Plaza;" Lubbock, Texas." Peter Shaw, a senior from Lindale: Honor Award-General Design/Undergraduate; "Cotton Patch Plains;" Lubbock, Texas.
The design competition, which included more than 25 projects, was judged on Feb. 16 by three landscape architects: Victor Baxter, vice president of landscape architecture and planning for Schrickel, Rollins & Associates, Inc.; James Richards, a co-founder of Townscape, Inc.; and Claude Thompson, a member of the editorial advisory board of Landscape Architecture magazine.
Competition categories included general design, analysis/planning, research and residential design.
Each category was organized into an undergraduate and graduate division.
"As members of ASLA, we have the social responsibility to create an aesthetically pleasing design that represents the natural environment, while at the same time appeals to the users in the present and the future to establish a journey for each person directly relates to their cultural aspects," said Price.
