Memorial service to mark life of Jean Kavanagh
Friends and colleagues from Texas Tech University's College of Agricultural Sciences
and Natural Resources, as well as the Lubbock community, will gather to pay tribute
to Jean Kavanagh at a memorial service at 10:30 a.m. on Friday (March 7) at St. Elizabeth's
University Parish.
The associate professor in Tech's Department of Landscape Architecture, who joined the faculty in 1990 after teaching landscape architecture at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, was a pioneer in the study of the design of therapeutic landscapes here in the United States. She died Jan. 25 after a brief battle with cancer. She was 61.
Outstanding. During her long career Kavanagh was honored as a Tau Sigma Delta Outstanding Faculty of the Year and was awarded the Council of Educators in Landscape Architecture's Award of Distinction in Teaching, Research and Public Service.
Kavanagh was active in community and professional programs, serving as an officer in the Texas Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects, the Horticultural Therapy Association, and Sigma Lambda Alpha National Landscape Architecture Honor Society. The Pittsburgh native studied architecture at Carnegie Mellon University and received a bachelor's and master's degree in landscape architecture from Cornell University.
