AEC faculty, students recognized at Costa Rica conference
Katie Leigh with the Department of Agricultural Education and Communications has been elected a graduate student representative to the Association for International Agriculture and Extension Education's Board of Directors. She was named to the post at the group's annual conference on March 14 at EARTH University in Costa Rica.
Leigh, a master's student in agricultural communications from San Antonio, is the first graduate student from Texas Tech to serve on the board. She will play a critical role in planning graduate student activities for the 2009 AIAEE conference in Puerto Rico, according to officials.
Agricultural Development. Separately, David Lawver, a professor in the Department of Agricultural Education and Communications and Carlos Villalobos, an associate professor in the Department of Natural Resource Management, along with three graduate students "" Leigh, Alyx Oshel and Kyle Pate "" received a second place poster award for a poster titled, "Cost Efficient International Experiences for Graduate Students."
The poster focused on a department course known as "Human Dimensions of International Agricultural Development." With the assistance of Villalobos, Lawver was able to expand a field trip to Chihuahua, Mexico last year to include visits to Camargo, Parral, and Guachochi. Students also spent time in Creel and Chihuahua City.
EARTH University is a private, international, non-profit university located in Costa Rica, dedicated to education in the field of agricultural sciences and the rational use of natural resources, with the interest of contributing to the sustainable development of the humid tropics. Founded in 1990, EARTH University has approximately 400 students from 24 countries in Latin America, Asia and Africa.
