Basic horse management short course set for May 21
Basic horse management will be addressed Wednesday, May 21, as part of a short course at Texas Tech University. The 8-5 p.m. program in room 101 of the university's animal and food sciences building is $40 a person with lunch and handout materials provided.
The program is sponsored by Texas Tech's College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources, Purina Mills, and AgriLife Extension "" Texas A&M System.
Presentations will begin with Brett Scott, a Texas A&M assistant professor and Extension horse specialist in the Department of Animal Science, who will discuss basic safety including approaching, tying, restraint and picking up feet. He will make a later presentation on basic horse nutrition.
Horse Management 101. Other speakers will include Vivian Allen, a Texas Tech Paul Whitfield Horn Professor and Thornton Distinguished Professor of Forages, who will review pasture and hay selection and usage, and Heidi Brady, a Texas Tech associate professor of equine behavior, will talk about basic horse reproduction.
Tiffany Brooks, an instructor with Tech's Department of Animal and Food Sciences, will provide a perspective on general health care and dentistry, and Kris Wilson, an assistant professor with Tech's Department of Animal and Food Sciences, will review body condition scoring and estimating body weight.
A presentation on permanent identification and protection of horses and tack will be presented by Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association Special Ranger and District Supervisor Scott Williamson. The program will conclude with a talk about basic hoof care by ferrier Blane Chapman
