New natural resource economist hired for CASNR
Aaron Benson was recently hired to fill a new assistant professor position in natural resource and environmental economics with Texas Tech University's College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources.
With a bachelor's degree in mathematics from Brigham Young University and doctorate in economics from Washington State University, Benson was an excellent fit for the position, said Eduardo Segarra, chairman of the Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics. "We're pleased that Dr. Benson has joined our faculty," he said.
Water Conservation. Benson said he anticipates focusing his program initially on water resource issues associated with agricultural production in terms of both water quality and quantity.
"I will be working on identifying policies that actually promote conservation," he said. "It's a tricky problem because often water conservation policies actually end up encouraging greater consumption of water because of the economics of how a farmer reacts to things in the field."
Economic Theory. A native of Salt Lake City, Benson will be working at Tech's Agricultural Science Building on the main campus in Lubbock where his teaching activities will include undergraduate courses in economic theory and graduate courses in natural resource economics.
"I'm also interested in agricultural sustainably and natural resource conservation," Benson said. "Another is developing policy that hopefully guides bio-fuels and bio-energy technology initiatives.
