Longtime AFS professor, administrator Bob Albin retires
Bob Albin, a professor of beef cattle nutrition and management, retired May 19 after more than four decades at Texas Tech University's College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources. A reception honoring the long-time professor and administrator was held in the atrium of the new Animal and Food Sciences building.
"Bob Albin has been a long-term advocate of Texas Tech University and the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources," said Norman Hopper, CASNR's Associate Dean for Academic and Student Programs. "He has been key in building our College into an internationally recognized organization."
Quality Experience. Among Albin's accomplishments was the establishment of programs aimed at making the Department of Animal and Food Sciences a place that provides each student with a quality educational experience in a personalized environment.
Raised on a livestock farm near Follett, Albin joined the Tech faculty in 1964 working in several critical posts. They include CASNR assistant director for research, chairman of the Department of Animal Science and director of the Texas Tech Institute for Research in Plant Stress.
Research Programs. He later worked as director of the cooperative research program at the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station, associate dean and director of Texas Tech Research and Agricultural Operations, and CASNR's associate dean for research.
He also travelled the globe providing expertise in a variety of international programs, including evaluating the U.S. Peace Corps beef cattle program in Peru; serving as a beef cattle feedyard management consultant to private industry in Monterrey, Mexico; and conducting a feasibility study on ranching/mixed agriculture programs in Niger, Africa. In addition, he conducted an evaluation of the small ruminant collaborative research support programs in Peru and Kenya.
Animal Scientist. Albin received a bachelor's degree in agricultural sciences and animal husbandry, and a master's degree in animal science and nutrition, both from Texas Tech. His doctorate in nutrition and statistics is from the University of Nebraska.
He is a member of the American Society of Animal Science and the American Registry of Professional Animal Scientists. Albin is a certified animal scientist, a charter diplomat with the American College of Animal Nutrition and founding president of the Plains Nutrition Council.
