Pork leadership camp comes to Texas Tech
A special group of 4-H and FFA students that were interested in swine projects and wanted to know more about the pork industry this summer got a firsthand look some of the state's best practices June 17 during a portion of the 2008 Texas Pork Leadership Camp held at Texas Tech University's College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources
Bus Tour. The six-day camp, which started in Amarillo and ended in College Station, was a traveling bus tour that visited key industry locations with 16 students and their chaperons. According to officials, the goal of the program is to give participants an in-depth look at the pork industry through special tours and hands-on learning activities, as well as develop leadership skills to be effective spokespersons for the pork industry.
Those students participating in the pork leadership camp were tasked with a number of assignments, including:" Participating in a quiz bowl at the end of the camp" Receiving media training and participating in a mock television interview" Giving a two three-minute oral presentations and working together with other participants for a team oral presentation
Live Projections. While at Texas Tech's Department of Animal and Food Sciences the students made live projections on back fat, loin-eye area and percent lean of four hogs. In addition, they learned about proper harvesting methods for swine and basics of sensory panels, in addition to receiving a presentation about the pH, which is the measure of the acidity or alkalinity of a solution, of meats and other foods. The program was sponsored by the Texas Pork Producers Association and Texas Agrilife Extension.
