Red Raider women compete at College National Finals Rodeo
Texas Tech University women reined in an eighth place team finish Saturday (June 21), accumulating 235 points in the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association 2008 women's team title race at Wyoming's Casper Events Center.
Four Red Raiders earned title points in various rounds of the 60th College National Finals Rodeo with senior Heather Turner (top) of Cochrane, Alberta, finishing tenth in the national goat tying competition while senior Romany Gordon pf Castle Rock, Colo., finished ninth in barrel racing after qualifying for the final round.
Tech team members who competed in preliminary rounds were junior Kelsy Friskup of Muleshoe in break-away roping and senior Tiana Thornton of San Angelo in barrel racing. Texas Tech Rodeo teams are coached by Chris Guay and assistant coach Phil Barnes.
Women's Teams. Final rankings for the women's teams were, in order, University of Nevada "" Las Vegas, New Mexico State University, Panhandle State University, University of Wyoming, Texas A&M University, Weatherford College, Walla Walla Community College, Texas Tech University, Tarleton State University and College of Southern Idaho.
The National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association crowns individual event champions in saddle bronc riding, bare back riding, bull riding, tie-down roping, steer wrestling, team roping, barrel racing, breakaway roping, and goat tying. National team championships are awarded to both men's and women's teams.
Casper Contestants. More than 400 cowboys and cowgirls from over 100 universities and colleges competed in Casper. Contestants compete all year in one of the NIRA's 11 regions for a chance to rope or ride at the College National Finals Rodeo.
The top three students in each event, and top two men's and women's teams from the NIRA's 11 regions qualify for the national finals. Student athletes also compete for more than $200,000 in scholarships from the U.S. Smokeless Tobacco Co. Scholarship Awards Program.
