Research institute sets open house for July 18
A half-day open house has been scheduled for Texas Tech University faculty and staff at the newly renamed Department of Plant and Soil Science's Fiber and Biopolymer Research Institute. Located at 1001 East Loop 289, the internationally recognized research facility, formerly known as the International Textile Center, will hold the event from noon and 4 p.m. on July 18.
"Visit us and take an opportunity to better understand the FBRI's research into the cotton fiber and groundbreaking methods to better enhance its economic value," said Dean Ethridge, the research institute's managing director.
Sophisticated Research. University officials indicated earlier this month that the name change was made in move to better reflect the increasingly sophisticated molecular cotton and fiber research conducted through its facilities. The institute's building has undergone recent renovation, including the enlarging the materials evaluation laboratory and creating the institute's new biopolymer research laboratory.
The biopolymer research laboratory is fundamental to the organization's longstanding mission to add value to natural fibers produced in Texas and an integral part of a growing collaboration with plant breeders, geneticists and biotechnologists.
"The new name was chosen to better communicate our research mission," explained Ethridge. "Our efforts to enhance the economic value of cotton as an industrial raw material have increasingly involved research at the structural and molecular levels."
