Natural resources management adds new restoration ecologist
Robert Cox, a restoration ecologist from the University of California, has been named an assistant professor in Texas Tech University's Department of Natural Resources Management, according to officials with the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources. He began his teaching and research duties on Sept. 1.
"Tech has a very strong history in the area of natural resources management, and has a very bright future," Cox said. "I feel very fortunate to be a part of that future."
At Texas Tech, Cox's research focus will be on community and restoration ecology, distribution and conservation of rare and endemic plant species, and ecology of invasive species. In the classroom, he'll teach vegetation inventory and analysis, range plant ecology, and range improvements.
Research Focus. In the past his research has centered on large-scale restoration experiments with practical applications, as well as landscape-scale factors contributing to the decline and loss of native plant communities and rare, endemic species.
Prior joining Texas Tech, Cox was a post-doctoral ecologist with the Grassland, Shrubland and Desert Ecosystem Research Program at the USDA's Forest Service Rocky Mountain Research Station in Boise. He also worked as a research assistant with the University of California-Riverside's Center for Conservation Biology, and a teaching assistant with that university's Department of Botany and Plant Science.
A native of Utah, he received his bachelor's degree in conservation biology and his master's degree in botany from Brigham Young University. His doctorate in ecology and conservation biology is from the University of California-Riverside. He's a member of The Ecological Society of America, The Society for Ecological Restoration, and The Society for Range Management.
