New soil, environmental microbiologist comes to Texas Tech
Jennifer Moore-Kucera has joined Texas Tech University's Department of Plant and Soil Science as assistant professor of soil and environmental microbiology. She stepped into her post on Sept. 1.
"My overall approach is interdisciplinary "" combining traditional and novel techniques in soil science, microbial ecology and biogeochemistry," Moore-Kucera said.
Moore-Kucera's research will focus on soil microbial ecology system, specifically managed and natural landscapes. The new professor will be looking at soil biochemical attributes of soil quality and how biochemical transformations during decomposition affect plant growth, productivity and air and water quality.
Research Focus. Prior to coming to Texas Tech, Moore-Kucera served as a postdoctoral soil scientist with Oregon State University's Department of Horticulture. Her area of interest was soil microbial ecology and nutrient management systems of sweet cherry orchards. She also worked as a postdoctoral soil scientist with USDA-ARS' Southwest Watershed Research Center in Tucson where her focus was on semi-arid grasslands.
A native of New York State, Moore-Kucera earned a bachelor's degree in biology and environmental science from Binghamton University and a master's degree in soil science from Iowa State University. She received her doctorate in soil science with a focus on soil microbiology and biochemistry from Oregon State University. She's a member of American Society of Agronomy, Soil Science Society of America, and the American Society for Horticultural Science.
