Texas Tech places second at 'world series' of swine shows
Texas Tech University's Livestock Judging Team proved itself to be among the best in the nation after taking the second spot in rankings at what's been called the world series of swine shows, the 62nd National Barrow Show. Held Sept. 7-10 at the Mower County Fairgrounds in Austin, Minn., the prestigious competition featured 16 teams from across the nation.
The Red Raiders placed second in the senior college division with a score of 3015 points. Coached by Ryan Rathmann, the team was comprised of Josh Campbell, Chance Williams, Bryan Bernhard, Chance Van Dyke, Judd Gardner, Colton Long and Marcus Arnold.
University of Illinois won first place in the senior college division with a score of 3026 points out of a possible 3250 points. Texas A&M University came in third with a score of 3003. Iowa State University finished fourth with 2972 and Colorado State University was fifth with a score of 2918.
Additional team placings in the senior college division were Oklahoma State University (6) 2916; University of Minnesota(7) 2907; Purdue University (8) 2874; University of Arkansas (9) 2855; and Western Illinois University (10) 2798.
The University of Illinois' Jacob Jones was the top individual in the university division with 618 points out of a possible 650.Teammates Josh Campbell and Chance Williams of Texas Tech finished third and fourth respectively with scores of 611 and 610.
Senior college reasons awards were given to the top team and top five individuals. The University of Illinois team captured first with 938 points. The high individual in reasons was U of I's Brian Down with a score of 193 of 200 possible. With a score of 190 Texas Tech's Josh Campbell placed second.
In third and fourth with scores of 189 were Bryan Bernhard of Texas Tech and U of I's Travis Meteer. Marcus Arnold of Texas Tech took home fifth with a total of 188. The ties were broken based on lower placing totals for reasons classes.
Texas Tech, which is also coached by Jon DeClerck, has four more contests this fall, including the Tulsa Judging Contest, State Fair of Texas, Kansas City Royal, and the North American International Livestock Exposition.
