Agronomy Club sparkles at SASES Quiz Bowl contest
For the second year in a row, Texas Tech University's Agronomy Club earned top honors in the Students in Agronomy, Soils and Environmental Sciences (SASES) Quiz Bowl competition held in conjunction with its national meeting Oct. 4-6 in Houston.
The five-member team included Chris Griffen, the club's president, Seth Sowder, Justin Cave, Heath Reeves and Galen Roberts. The team is coached by Craig Bednarz, an associate professor of crop physiology in the Department of Plant and Soil Science.
Competitive Teams. The SASES Quiz Bowl challenged competitive teams from 25 universities from across the nation, including Kansas State University, Iowa State University, University of Illinois and Purdue University. Contestants competed in oral and poster presentation events, as well as facing off in the Quiz Bowl, itself.
SASES has chapters from colleges and universities around the nation that provide a curriculum in agronomy, crops, soils and environmental sciences. The national contest is part of a variety of programs and activities offered at the local and national level for students interested in becoming professionally involved and prepared for future success in agronomy and environmental sciences.
According to officials, more than 10,000 international scientists, professionals, educators, and students gathered at the George R. Brown Convention Center to discuss the latest research and trends in energy, water resources, climate change, agriculture, science education, earth sciences and related disciplines.
