Cowboys saddle up for opening of intercollegiate rodeo
Fresh of a promising start to their season, the Texas Tech Rodeo team hosts the 59th Annual Texas Tech University National Intercollegiate Rodeo this weekend (Oct. 23-25) at the Tech Equestrian Center indoor arena.
Ticket prices at the door are $8 for Thursday and Friday's preliminary rounds and $10 for the Top 10 Finals on Saturday night. Students with a valid Texas Tech student ID are admitted half price on Thursday night (Oct. 23). Sul Ross Rodeo. According to team officials, the men's rodeo team began the season impressively at the Sul Ross Rodeo, Oct. 2-4, where it placed second out of 16 college and university teams.
Logan Allen, a junior agricultural leadership major from Crescent, Iowa, led Texas Tech in points and was crowned the rodeo's Champion All-Around Cowboy. He was awarded a trophy belt buckle. Allen earned his overall honors by placing second overall in saddle bronc riding and second overall in the bull riding competition.
Jacob Nebeker, a senior agriculture and applied economics major from Battle Mt., Nevada, bested his teammate Allen by winning first place honors in the rodeo's saddle bronc riding competition. Jake Brown and Blaine Vick also won individual honors by placing first in team roping with a blistering 6.0 second run in the finals to win both the short go and the championship aggregate on two steers.
Other members that advanced to the 'Top Ten' finals Saturday night included:"Boone Gaines, a freshman animal and food sciences major from Sikeston, Missouri, who notched an eighth place finish in steer wrestling"Richard George, a freshman business major from Dallas who placed fourth in the first go round and seventh overall in bull riding"Courtney Rankin, a sophomore animal and food sciences major from Tuscola who hauled in a ninth place finish in barrel racing
Vernon Rodeo. Though not as successful at the Vernon Rodeo, Oct. 9-11, the men and women's teams nevertheless had an impressive showing, with the women's team notching a fourth place overall finish. Jake Brown earned a second place overall showing, with a sixth place tie down roping and an eighth place team roping header performance.
Dakota Lee Raspberry and Stetson Wayne Raspberry earned third and fourth place honors respectively in bull riding. Erica Creswell, second place in breakaway roping, and Kori Jorgensen, third place in goat tying, rounded out the Tech Rodeo's performance in Vernon. Written by Sean Cleveland
