Editorial: Researchers raising bar at Texas Tech
Lubbock Avalanche-Journal / Friday, October 03, 2008The Texas Tech University System is teaming with an Austin company to commercialize some of the innovations developed by researchers in Tech's animal and food sciences department and the Health Sciences Center department of obstetrics and gynecology.
Why does this matter to you? The benefits to Lubbock and its residents are two-fold. Tech's partnership with Austin-based LGE Execs promises not only to push more of the university's research into the open market but also bring new high-paying jobs to our area.
Tech doesn't get the publicity some of the other larger universities get, but some of the research they've done there is as good if not better than what's coming out of other schools, according to Newt Hamlin, managing partner for LGE, which is made up of 90 seasoned business leaders with executive success.
The first company being pushed out the door with assistance from Tech is an agri-business company called Gamete that has developed an artificial insemination product in a collaborative effort with the university and the Health Sciences Center.
Livestock artificial insemination is a $27 billion global industry that "presents an enormous opportunity for Gamete and Texas Tech," said Jim Havener, CEO for the newly launched endeavor.
LGE is evaluating other licensing opportunities with the university in areas related to cancer treatments, alternative energy, nanotechnology, computer sciences and industrial materials.
This added investment in research may produce dividends for the entire region, according to Kent Hance, Texas Tech System chancellor. "Through the efforts of our Technology Commercialization Office," he said, "we are working to convert research discoveries into new products and licensed technologies that may spawn new businesses in and around Lubbock."
