While Colorado offers some of the nation's "" and world's "" most dramatic landscapes, Kasie Pigg, a native of Pueblo, Colo., chose the wide-open spaces of the Texas South Plains to be her university home.
"I love Texas Tech," said Kasie, who is wrapping up her senior year as an agricultural communications major with an emphasis on electronic media. "Everyone down here is so welcoming."
Just a few years ago, Kasie found herself reviewing her final choices of where she wanted to go to college. Like many of her classmates, Colorado State University was near the top of the list.
"I was set to go to CSU, but I met Dr. Cindy Akers at a conference for agricultural teachers and administrators in Colorado Springs," Kasie said. "She was so nice and did such good job of keeping in touch with me following the meeting."
Kasie was attending the conference as a Colorado State FFA officer, and Akers, an associate professor in the Department of Agricultural Education and Communications, was in the Centennial state representing her department.
As a result of their chance meeting, Kasie and her father, George, travelled some 430 miles to Lubbock for a campus visit and a personal tour by Akers. Kasie was soon convinced that Tech Tech was the place for her and enrolled as a freshman in the fall of 2006.
Today, Kasie is heavily involved in a number of College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources' leadership positions, including serving as Agri-Texsan coordinator and assisting as a CASNR Ambassador for Agriculture.
Agri-Techsans are the official student recruiters for CASNR, while the Ambassadors for Agriculture are a group of young men and women dedicated to spreading the story of American agriculture and opportunities for youth in the broad fields of agriculture and natural resources.
"It's a good thing to promote Tech to out-of-state students," Kasie said. "In Colorado everyone seems to push the state schools and students begin to think that it's their only option. The great thing about Tech is that there are out-of-state waivers available for scholarship students, and CASNR has a lot of scholarships."
In addition to her classroom and leadership duties, Kasie serves as a video intern in the Texas Tech Office of Communications and Marketing Broadcast Services. Along with logging tape and editing, Kasie often works on development of student-generated content for the You Tube network.
After graduating in May, Kasie plans either to attend graduate school with a focus on electronic media, or enter broadcast journalism and possibly cover rodeo events. In fact, rodeo is often on her mind.
This summer she'll be competing in the Miss Rodeo Colorado Pageant, held during the Greeley Independence Stampede's 4th of July celebration in Greeley, Colo. "I'm very comfortable around horses," Kasie said with a smile.
