New aquatic ecologist arrives at Texas Tech
David Rogowski, an aquatic ecologist with international experience, has been named an assistant professor in Texas Tech University's Department of Natural Resources Management, according to officials with the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources. He began his teaching and research duties on August 1.
At Texas Tech, Rogowski's research focus will be on aquatic ecology, in particular working in streams and springs in arid areas of the Southwest. "I work with a variety of fish and aquatic invertebrates of conservation interest, that include native species in decline and invasive species," he said.
Research Interests. His research interests revolve around ecology and evolution, primarily in aquatic systems. He's particularly interested in how organisms and, ultimately, populations respond to their environment. Specifically, Rogowski is interested in how populations and communities respond to introduced species, environmental factors, parasites, predators and pollution.
"How populations and communities respond to these stressors can provide insight into evolutionary processes," Rogowski said.
Fish and Wildlife. Prior to joining Texas Tech, Rogowski was a post-doctoral researcher at the Arizona Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit of the University of Arizona's Natural Resources Department. He also worked with Quercus, the United Kingdom's first cooperative research center for biodiversity and conservation biology, a joint research venture between Queen's University and Environment and Heritage Services of Northern Ireland. Additionally, Rogowski has also worked at the Illinois Natural History Survey in the Center for Aquatic Ecology and Conservation.
Rogowski received his bachelor's degree from Oakland University-Rochester, Mich., and his master's degree from the University of Louisiana-Lafayette. He earned his doctorate from North Dakota State University.
