Texas Tech equestrian team off to a strong start
Texas Tech University's equestrian team excelled in their season's first Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) Hunt Seat Show, hosted by Trinity University in San Antonio, Oct. 15-16. The Red Raiders came out of the blocks quickly on the first day of competition, earning high point team honors for the day.
Lindsey Mortimer earned High Point Rider for the day after winning first place in both equitation on the flat and equitation over fences. All remaining members of the team also won ribbons on Saturday, thereby adding to the team's impressive point totals.
Opening Day. Tech students Julia Lindholm, Brooke Brodbeck, Lindsey Mortimer, Heather Hocking, Chelsea Hosmer, Kristen Hillger, Jane Youngblood, and Calan Cervenka competed in the competition. Of particular note, Kristen Hillger and Jane Youngblood took home first place ribbons in their respective classes for equitation over fences, while teammate Chelsea Hosmer earned second place honors in her equitation over fences class.
The team followed up impressively on their opening day performance with a superb Sunday of competition, as well. Again, Texas Tech finished the day as the high point team, with two members, Kristen Hillger and Chelsea Hosmer, tied for high point rider honors. Complementing the success of their teammates, every member of the team once again earned ribbons on Sunday.
Focus Shifts. In total, Lindsey Mortimer, Chelsea Hosmer, Kristen Hillger, and Jane Youngblood all took home first place blue ribbons in the equitation on the flat competition, while Brooke Brodbeck, Lindsey Mortimer, Chelsea Hosmer, and Kristen Hillger took second place in their equitation over fences classes.
Fresh off its dominating performance in San Antonio, the Equestrian Team now shifts its focus to next month's competitions, with the team's second Hunt Seat show of the season, hosted by Louisiana State University at Baton Rouge, on Nov. 15-16, followed by a Western show hosted by North Central Texas College in Gainesville on Nov. 25-26.
With continued excellence in competition, the Texas Tech Equestrian team has high hopes for qualifying for the 2009 IHSA National Championship Show in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, April 23-26.
