Soil Profiles. The regional competition required the team to describe, classify and evaluate soil profiles in order to predict its fertility and suitability for specific land uses at four individually judged sites and two group-judged sites, said Wayne Hudnall, coach and B. L. Allen Endowed Professor of Pedology.
Professional soil scientists then compared their own analysis of the soil's composition and structure with that of the team in order to score the team's assessments, he said. Scores from both the individual and group assessments were then tallied to come up with the team's overall score. Teams competing in October's competition included Texas Tech, University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, Louisiana State University, Oklahoma State University, Texas A&M University, Texas Tech, and West Texas A&M University.
