Tech equestrians rank 2nd in regional IHSA standings
Fresh off early season victories at West Texas A&M and North Central Texas College, Texas Tech University's equestrian team continued its winning ways by taking reserve high point team honors twice during a two-show Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) competition at Louisiana State University Nov. 15-16.
The Red Raiders effort in Baton Rouge solidifies the team's second place ranking in the IHSA Hunt Seat Regional Standings, and keeps the riders on track to compete in the association's Zone Championship in the spring.
First-Place Ribbons. During the second show on Sunday, Julia Lindholm claimed first place honors in the open equitation on the flat class. Teammate Chelsea Hosmer earned first place in Novice equitation over fences on Sunday, as well, while Calan Cervenka won the beginner walk/trot/canter equitation.
All competing team members earned ribbons in both shows for their performances. Most notably, Lindsey Mortimer, Chelsea Hosmer, and Lauren Cook each won second-place ribbons in their respective classes.
Championship Run. Even as several riders are nearing individual qualification for the 2009 Regional Championship, the team, too, is positioned nicely for a championship run. Tech is currently the reserve high point hunt seat team in Zone 7, Region 2, and is ranked second overall in the region. They hope to regain their lead in the region over the next couple of competitions, with the aim of peaking for the IHSA Zone Championship in the spring.
The equestrian team continues its qualifying run for the 2009 IHSA National Championship with a Nov. 22""23 western show hosted by West Texas A&M University in Canyon.
