In Profile: Academic All-Big 12, AFS standout balances academics and softball
The importance of time management and self-discipline have becoming increasingly evident to Taylor Powell, a junior animal science major, who's continually learning to balance her role as a full-time student while roaming the infield on Texas Tech's softball team.
The Henrietta native is in her third year playing softball for the university. Meanwhile, she continues to pursue her academic goal of going to veterinary school, all while maintaining a 4.0 grade-point average. Powell credits her success largely to Department of Animal and Food Sciences faculty members.
The faculty's willingness to work with her athletic schedule and their commitment to invest extra time in her education has enabled her to live her dream, Powell said. "It's great to have people that want to see you excel in the classroom and on the field," she said.
Agriculture and softball have always been a large part of Powell's life. Growing up on her family's farm she began playing softball early. And, when the time came to decide on college, Texas Tech was an easy decision. "Tech has all the tools I need," she said. "I'm at a place with a good softball team that also has everything I need to achieve my career goals."
Powell said she uses her competitive nature to achieve victories on the softball field, and help her attain her academic dream of specializing in large animal sports medicine. "I hope to serve as a positive representative for both CASNR and Tech athletics," Powell said. Last year Powell appeared in 35 games and was a first team selection for the Academic All-Big 12. She was one of three Tech players recognized, and one of six from the conference to be nominated.
