Earlier this year the Ranch Horse Team claimed its fourth consecutive national championship and captured individual titles across all three divisions at the National Intercollegiate Ranch and Stock Horse Association national championships in Amarillo. The team has a significant success record, winning national championships in 2009, 2011, 2013, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2019, 2021, 2022 and 2023.
The SHTX collegiate program was started by the late Kris Wilson in 2005. At the time, Wilson was teaching classes in Texas Techs Department of Animal & Food Sciences and started a team concept by bringing a group of individuals to a SHTX show clad in matching black shirts with the Texas Tech logo on the back. His idea of a competitive venue for college students to show has grown into a collegiate program with more than a 20 schools. Wilson's doctorate in ruminate nutrition was from Texas Tech.
