Two outstanding doctoral students from Texas Techs Department of Animal & Food Sciences received top honors at the Plains Nutrition Councils Graduate Student Poster Competition on Friday (Apr. 11). The recognition for their research was presented at the organizations annual meeting in San Antonio with more than 600 attendees from all over the U.S., Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Australia and Canada.
- 1st Place | Landon Canterbury | Canyon, Texas. Title: Energy Balance and Net Energy for Maintenance of Beef x Dairy Crossbred Steers
- 4th place | Colten Dornbach | Minnetonka, Minnesota. Title: Longitudinal assessment of Fusobacterium necrophorum and Salmonella enterica concentration and prevalence in relation to feedlot cattle health and management
"It is a privilege to mentor high-achieving graduate students and watch them make a positive impact on the beef industry,” said Kristin Hales, Professor & Thorton Distinguished Chair within the Department of Animal & Food Sciences.
Formed in 1970, the Plains Nutrition Council is an educational and professional organization for people who work and serve as livestock feeding nutritionists, nutrition consultants, research scientists and educators in livestock science.
Texas Techs Department of Animal & Food Sciences is home to approximately 30 faculty members in, many of whom are leading researchers in their respective fields. Areas of research excellence include meat science and muscle biology, food science and safety, animal nutrition, health and welfare, and companion animal science. The department continues to experience unprecedented growth in student enrollment (Fall 2024) and is comprised of more than 1,469 students (Graduate: 95 / Undergraduates: 1,374).
