Student research posters were featured earlier this semester during Texas Tech's Department of Animal & Food Sciences Annual Bob Albin Poster Competition. The event was held at the Animal & Food Sciences Building.
This type of Davis College of Agricultural Sciences & Natural Resources event provides an instrumental opportunity for students at all stages of their programs to present their research and receive feedback from experts. It is particularly beneficial to students or collaborators who are conducting research and are planning to present their work at major conferences.
Among the AFS students receiving high honors for their research posters were:
Doctoral Degree (Judges: Jerrad Legako & Vinicius Machado)
- First Place | Landon Canterbury | Canyon, Texas | Title: Energy balance and net energy for maintenance of beef × dairy crossbred steers
- Second Place | Bridger Sparks | Laramie, Wyoming | Title: Adipose tissue neuro-like cell profile changes with ketosis in dairy cows
- Third Place | Elizabeth Neal | Farmington, Arkansas | Title: Evaluation of cooked color and sensory performance of whole muscle steaks under nitric oxide-modified atmosphere and traditional packaging systems
Masters Degree (Judges: Clarissa Strieder-Barboza & Noureddine Abidi)
- First Place | John Nials | Dalhart, Texas | Title: Comparison of Synovex reimplant programs for beef steers fed more than 200 days on feed

Bob Albin, a professor of beef cattle nutrition and management, served at Texas Tech for more than four decades. He retired in 2002 but worked part-time through 2008. He received Emeritus Status in 2009. Raised on a livestock farm near Follett, Albin joined the Tech faculty in 1964 working in several critical posts. They include Davis College assistant director for research, chair of the Department of Animal & Food Sciences and director of the Texas Tech Institute for Research in Plant Stress.
Today, there are approximately 30 faculty members in the department, many of whom are leading researchers in their respective fields. Areas of research excellence include meat science and muscle biology, food science and safety, animal nutrition, health and welfare, and companion animal science. The department continues to experience unprecedented growth in student enrollment (Fall 2024) and is comprised of more than 1,469 students (Graduate: 95 / Undergraduates: 1,374).
