AFS’s Johnson Brings Home ASAS Animal Growth & Development Award

Bradley Johnson, a professor at Texas Tech University and the Gordon W. Davis Regents Chair in Meat Science & Muscle Biology, has been named the recipient of the 2025 Animal Growth & Development Award by the American Society of Animal Science (ASAS), one of the highest honors in the field.

The award, which recognizes outstanding research and contributions, was presented during a formal ceremony this week at the ASAS-CSAS Annual Meeting in Hollywood, Florida.

“It is a great honor to be recognized by my peers within the American Society of Animal Science,” Johnson said. “I’ve been a member of this society since my undergraduate days at South Dakota State in 1990. Many of my most important findings have appeared in the Journal of Animal Science, so this recognition is especially meaningful.”

Johnson, a native of Milbank, South Dakota, is internationally known for his work on the physiology and mechanisms of veterinary compounds used in livestock production, including steroidal implants and beta-adrenergic agonists. His more recent studies have focused on the metabolism of chemical residues in edible tissues—a line of inquiry that has positioned him as a key expert in international anti-doping cases involving meat consumption.

“Dr. Johnson’s selection is a testament to the remarkable impact of his research and mentorship,” said Chance Brooks, Chair of the Department of Animal & Food Sciences at Texas Tech’s Davis College. “His work has advanced our understanding of muscle growth and development in market animals and continues to influence both policy and practice at the national and global levels.”

Beyond the lab, Johnson’s influence extends into regulatory and scientific advisory roles. He is currently serving a five-year term on the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives, an elite panel that informs international food safety standards.

Since joining the Texas Tech faculty in 2008, Johnson has published 162 peer-reviewed journal articles and 12 book chapters or invited reviews, while mentoring more than 70 graduate and postdoctoral students. His previous academic appointments include faculty roles at Kansas State University and South Dakota State University, where he also served as an Extension Beef Feedlot Specialist.

Johnson earned his undergraduate degree in animal science from South Dakota State University, and completed his M.S. and Ph.D. in animal science at the University of Minnesota.
