As summer slips away, first-year students heading to Texas Tech’s Davis College of Agricultural Sciences & Natural Resources feel the excitement, and perhaps a touch of anxiety. Move-in day is both a milestone and a logistical challenge. To help navigate the experience, University Student Housing is offering some practical suggestions designed to streamline the process.

Among the reminders are:

  • Bring Half – Regret Less: Resist the urge to pack your entire life. Experienced students recommend trimming packing lists significantly, as overpacking tends to complicate an already hectic day. Students are encouraged to unbox items in advance and rely on local stores in Lubbock for forgotten essentials.
  • Furniture Stays Put: Furnishings provided by the university—including mattresses and seating—must remain in place. While students may bring additional pieces, removals are prohibited. Likewise, decorating comes with limits. Items that require nails, wallpaper, or even adhesives marketed as “removable” may result in damage charges and are strongly discouraged.
  • Hydrate or Melt Trying: With Lubbock's late-summer heat often pushing triple digits, students are reminded to dress appropriately, stay hydrated, and apply sunscreen. Safety and comfort should be a top priority.
  • Read Before Rolling: Preparation doesn’t stop at packing. Students are encouraged to read their residence hall’s community policies before investing in dorm appliances or decorations. To facilitate a smoother move-in, University Housing also recommends bringing a dolly or hand truck, especially for heavier items like mini-fridges or bins.
  • Valuables Vanish: Security concerns are also top of mind. Families staying in hotels the night before Tech-In are reminded not to leave electronics or valuables in plain sight inside their vehicles.
  • Inbox = Lifeline: Finally, all official Tech-In communication—including roommate assignments, instructions, and updates—will be sent to Texas Tech email accounts. Students are urged to check that inbox regularly in the days leading up to their arrival.
