New Deal Farm

The Texas Tech Research Farm in New Deal, Texas, is just 12 miles northeast of Lubbock, and sits on 120 acres dedicated to crop and livestock research for the Department of Plant and Soil Science and the Department of Animal and Food Sciences. This location supports research in irrigation management, cotton physiology, cotton stress tolerance, weed science, soil fertility, and forage physiology, along with feeding trials, feedlot management, and companion animal training. Built in the 1970s, the farm’s facilities have not had any major renovations.  

As part of the campaign, the New Deal Farm is on the shortlist of sites for renovation to support faculty, researchers and students with improved facilities.

Redesign

“We are thinking from the ground up,” said Alexandre Rocateli, Ph.D., associate professor of integrated crop and livestock systems at Davis College. “Our infrastructure goes back to the 70s, and that doesn’t fit with the research and technology we have today. Our goal right now is to collaborate with the New Deal’s Research Team to develop functional, modern buildings that meet current research, teaching and outreach standards. We are also thinking about how we can improve the farm and integrate all the disciplines that work here.”  

Rocateli said these renovations will help with overall operations of the farm.  

“We are partnering with external partners, and laying out a better way that we can integrate all the research units we have, from crop to livestock irrigation systems,” he said. “We might be building the new buildings from the ground up in different locations than they are now.”  

By reimagining new buildings, Rocateli said he hopes these new spaces encourage collaboration across many departments.  

“With this redesign, students will be able to communicate and share information with peers from other disciplines,” he said. “In today’s world, it’s important not only to retrieve specialized information within a field but also to understand how those results and areas of expertise influence other disciplines and professionals.”
