CMLL had an exceptional semester this spring. Faculty members Dr. Charles Grair, Dr. Diego Pascual, Lori Mallory, and graduate students Dora Aranda, Janie Covarrubias, and Josh de la Rosa Prada were recognized by the University for their outstanding instruction. Dr. Idoia Elola received the Donald R. Haragan Study Abroad Award. Dr. Sara Guengerich won a prestigious John Carter Brown Library Fellowship. Dr. Kimi Nakatsukasa is a co-principal investigator for a $100,000 grant awarded by Texas Tech. Dr. Peter Barta received a 2017 International Seed Grant Competition. Dr. Christopher Witmore was awarded a fellowship from the American-Scandinavian Foundation. Rula Al-Hmoud received the President's Excellence in Diversity and Equity Award. Ten of our faculty received TTU Scholarship Catalyst Grants which will allow them to conduct research here and abroad. Ruben Varona and Josh de la Rosa Prada were recipients of the TTU Doctoral Dissertation Completion Fellowships. Isabel Ojeda and Josh de la Rosa Prada both earned funding to support their research and studies. Finally, CMLL won this year's Campus Internationalization Award in recognition of all we do to create a global environment on campus.

A big change that happened this semester is that the Department of CMLL is no longer housed in the Foreign Language Building. We will still occupy the same space but the building will now be called after the department name, Classical and Modern Languages and Literatures. This name change has been a long time coming since we teach American Sign Language, English as a Second Language, and Spanish – languages that are native to the United States. The word "foreign" also conjures up for many people a sense of otherness and strangeness that does not reflect what we do in our department. Wherever you are in the world, we want you to feel at home.

Congratulations to Dr. John Baron and Dr. Rolando Diaz for successfully defending their dissertations this spring. We also congratulate our new MA and BA students! They have worked hard and we wish them well as they move on to the next stage of their careers.
