Spanish & Portuguese Program Scholarships for Undergraduate and Graduate Students

 

Deadline: January 30th, 2026 for awards to be announced and accepted by February 27th, 2026.

Please note that these scholarships are not to be awarded in consecutive years, so 2025 awardees are ineligible for this cycle.

Harley D. Oberhelman Spanish Scholarship

Eligibility:

  • Undergraduate Student (Junior or Senior) Majoring in Spanish
  • 3.0 GPA minimum at the end of last semester     

This scholarship is awarded to juniors or seniors majoring in Spanish. Applicants must have a minimum 3.0 GPA and participate in Spanish programs and activities. The award of at least $400 is payable at $200 per semester.   

Faye Laverne Bumpass Scholarships

Eligibility:

  • Undergraduate Student (Junior or Senior) Majoring in Spanish
  • Graduate Student
  • 3.0 GPA minimum at the end of last semester

These scholarships are awarded to deserving juniors, seniors or graduate students majoring in Spanish courses who are interested in teaching. Applicants must have a minimum 3.0 GPA, financial need, and high teacher potential. Two scholarships are awarded annually to students majoring in Spanish, with one award going to a student planning to teach bilingual education on any level and the other awardee being a student planning to teach at the elementary level. Each award will be in the amount of $300.

Gertrude Cross Suppe Endowed Scholarship

Eligibility:

  • Undergraduate Student
  • Graduate Student
  • 3.0 GPA minimum at the end of last semester
  • Major or Minor in Music and Spanish

This scholarship is awarded to undergraduate or graduate students who combine interests in music and Spanish. This might be evidenced by majoring in one area and minoring in the other. Preference will be given to applicants who wish to work with the Gertrude C. Suppe Collection of Hispanic Church music. The scholarship will be awarded only in years when there are worthy applicants.

Eunice Joiner Gates Memorial Scholarship in Portuguese 

Eligibility:

  • Graduate Student at the M.A. Level, minoring in Portuguese
  • Graduate Student at the Ph.D. Level, minoring in Portuguese

This scholarship was established by the family of Eunice Joiner Gates (1925-1963) in her memory. She was one of the nation’s outstanding pioneers in the field of Luso-Brazilian studies. 

This scholarship is for deserving graduate students minoring in Portuguese, usually at the Ph.D. level. Outstanding M.A. candidates are also encouraged to apply. Competition is annual and the award is renewable. The scholarship amount awarded varies.
