David Barr was born and raised in Dallas, TX. He received his bachelor of science in Mechanical Engineering from Texas Tech University in 1971.

In 1972, David joined Hughes Tool Company (later to become Baker Hughes) as a field engineer where he spent the next nine years in several assignments in Houma, Louisiana; Houston and Abilene, Texas; Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; and Singapore.

Baker Hughes is an oilfield services company comprising eight operating divisions organized into two groups focused on technology development, customer service, field operations, and financial performance. In the last 34 years, David has held various positions including general product manager, general manager carbide products, vice president of North American operations, vice president of Eastern Hemisphere operations, vice president of diamond products, and vice president of production and technology.

In 2000, David was named president of Baker Atlas, the division that provides oilfield wireline logging services. In 2005, David was named group president of drilling and evaluation with responsibility for four divisions of Baker Hughes. This group has responsibility for $4.6 billion in sales and 18,000 employees in approximately 90 countries around the globe.

David is a director of the Petroleum Equipment Suppliers Association and has served on its executive board since 2003. He is a member the Society of Petroleum Engineers, the Society of Petrophysicists and Well Log Analysts, International Association of Drilling Contractors, Nomads, and the World Affairs Council. David has served on the YMCA board in The Woodlands, TX, and is active as a director of Stages Repertory Theatre in Houston.

David and his wife, Donna, have two daughters, Lorie and Leslie; two grandsons, Ethan and Evan; and two granddaughters, Avery and Rylie.

It is a privilege and an honor for Texas Tech University’s College of Engineering to select this outstanding alumnus for recognition. David H. Barr is declared a DISTINGUISHED ENGINEER.
