Noel D. "Bud" Rietman hails from Amarillo, Texas. Mr. Rietman graduated from Texas Tech University in 1957 with a Bachelor of Science in Petroleum Engineering and in 1959 received a Bachelor of Arts in Geology. In 1966, he completed a master’s degree in mathematics at West Texas State University.

Mr. Rietman joined Diamond Shamrock Exploration Company in 1957 and progressed from junior engineer through a number of management levels to Vice President and General Manager of the Northern Division, Staff Vice President for Property Acquisitions, and most recently, Senior Vice President, North American Exploration and Production, under the new company name of Maxus Energy Corporation.

An active member of both the American Institute of Petroleum Geologists and the Society of Petroleum Engineers, he served as president of the latter organization in 1986/1987, and is currently a member of the SPE board of directors. He is a member of the Panhandle Geological Society, the Texas Mid–Continent Oil and Gas Association, the American Petroleum Institute, the American Gas Association, and the Panhandle Producers and Royalty Owners Association. In 1979, he was voted the Outstanding Engineer of the Panhandle Chapter of the Texas Society of Professional Engineers. In 1987, he was voted a Society of Petroleum Engineers Distinguished Member. As a spokesperson for SPE, he has contributed to articles on the petroleum industry which were published in the Oil & Gas Journal and in the Journal of Petroleum Technology.

Mr. Rietman’s church and community activities include service as parish council president and Serra Club president for St. Joseph Catholic Church in Amarillo and company chairmanship for United Way in Amarillo and Denver. At present, Mr. Rietman and his wife, the former Jeanne Bolenbach, are active in St. Rita Catholic church in Dallas.

The Rietmans have two daughters, Katie and Julie.

In light of his achievements and his service both to his profession and to the community, we are indeed proud to name Noel D. Rietman a DISTINGUISHED ENGINEER.
