Texas Tech University

Letter From the Superintendent

Dear TTU K-12 Community,

The weather on campus has cooled off considerably. One morning in early December, Lubbock had a gorgeous blanket of snow followed by a warmup in the afternoon. As the locals know, the weather in Lubbock doesn't stay the same for long; so is the case with TTU K-12. We continue to change in ways that will enhance the product our students receive. Here's some of what we have accomplished recently.

With support and direction from Texas Tech High School Principal Cari Moye, Texas Tech High School has initiated a National Honor Society (NHS) chapter. Stateside, as well as international students, are participating. Advisor Brenda Shupe will handle the day-to-day administration of the organization. The Texas Tech High School chapter will host its inaugural induction on Jan. 11 at the Texas Tech Club. As of this writing, we expect six honorees to travel to Lubbock and others to attend by live stream.

Thanks to Lisa Leach, Chyrel Mayfield and the curriculum crew for their expertise in facilitating course offerings. Here is a partial list of courses that have been put online recently: Culinary Arts; Forensic Science; Sports and Entertainment Marketing; Advertising and Sales Promotion; Creative Writing; Video Game Design; Exploring Careers; and Entrepreneurship. These courses either incorporate an electronic textbook or do not incorporate a textbook at all. That is great news for our students. For more information, check out our Course Catalog.

Jeff Oldham, principal for international partnerships, elementary and middle school; and Justin Louder, our associate vice provost, spent 13 days in Brazil working with new and current school partners. They trained approximately 35 coordinators and spoke at graduation ceremonies as well, where we have concurrent-diploma programs. Jeff is an excellent presenter, and we are thrilled to have the new students from Brazil this semester.

Pam Butler, our district testing coordinator, has been with TTU K-12 for 11 years, and during that time her expertise has become well-known throughout the state. Every year, each Education Service Center director selects one person from their region for a recognition award and certificate. The individuals are presented during the annual TSNAP (Texas Statewide Network of Assessment Professionals) luncheon at the Texas Assessment Conference. This year, Pam Brown, Region 17 director for the South Plains Association of Testing Specialists (SPATS) selected Pam for this award. Congratulations, Pam!

We appreciate everyone in the TTU K-12 Community!
