    Assignment 1.1: Short Answer

    You will submit this assignment using the Text Submission box that appears when you click on the Write Submission button in the assignment submission section. To avoid timing out the system, it is strongly suggested that you complete this assignment in a word processor (such as MS Word, OpenOffice.org, MS WordPad, etc.) first and then copy and paste the completed assignment into the textbox. When ready, click the Submit button to submit your assignment for grading.


     

    Answer the following short answer questions. Use complete sentences and proper spelling and grammar. Three to four sentences will suffice to answer most of the questions. Be sure to number your answers.


    This is a chance to see how well your notes are working for you. Hopefully your History Notebook will provide some of the answers, or it will at least help you remember where in the book you can find the answers. Use this assignment to gauge how you might need to adjust your note-taking skills.

    1. What economic and political conditions following World War I encouraged dictatorships?
    2. Why did many Americans support isolationism? Why did President Roosevelt support internationalism?
    3. How did the Nazi’s try to exterminate Europe’s Jewish population?
    4. How did World War II change life for women and minorities in the United States?
    5. How did the wartime relocation of many Americans affect US government and society?
    6. Why was the Battle of Midway a turning point in the war in the Pacific?
    7. Why did Churchill and Roosevelt want to attack German-controlled areas in North Africa before areas in Europe?
    8. How did the Allies achieve victory in Europe and Japan?
    9. Do you agree or disagree with President Truman’s decision to drop the atomic bomb? Why or why not?
    10. Using the secondary sources, what are the major opinions of historians concerning Truman’s decisions?

    Comparing Perspectives on Japanese Internment Camps during World War II

    Use the following photograph and videos to help you write your discussion post about U.S. Japanese internment camps during World War II.

    1942 Government Video

    The following video was produced by the U.S. Office of War Information and distributed by the War Activities Committee of the Motion Picture Industry and explains the formation of the Japanese internment camps.

    Thislast video is of George Takei, an actor, who lived in an Japanese internment camp during World War II.


     

    Assignment Instructions

    Post a 250-word initial discussion to the following:

    Compare and contrast the two different points of view provided in the videos. In your opinion, what led to these different points of view? Remember to identify who is involved, when this occurred, how, and why. Use any relevant historical information you've learned from your textbook.

    Next, reply to another student's post in 100 words. Please be polite. You should include one of the following phrases in your response and then give your reasons for agreeing or disagreeing with the person's post.

    History Notebook Part 1

    In the Learning Activities section of this Unit, you should have taken notes on the reading. Be sure you have the following information to attach to your journal entry. Remember that you'll be graded using the History Notebook Rubric. Refer to the Syllabus for more information on the History Notebook.

    Chapters 11 and 12

    • Required Notes (worth 50%):
      • Chapter 11
        • Lesson 1: outline detailing the origins of World War II
        • Lesson 2: graphic organizer about the events that shifted American Involvement in WWII
        • Lesson 3: graphic organizer showing examples of persecution during the Holocaust
      • Chapter 12
        • Lesson 4: outline of Lesson 4, including collapse of the Third Reich

     

    • Student-Chosen Notes (worth 40%):
      Please take other notes you think are important. Below are a few suggestions to help you earn this part of your notebook grade. Feel free to also take other notes on what you find interesting or helpful.
      • Chapter 12
        • Lesson 1: graphic organizer listing changes for women and minorities
        • Lesson 2: graphic organizer showing major Pacific Battles
        • Lesson 3: major European and North African Battles

    When you write your journal entry, please talk about the following:

    • why you took notes in the manner that you did (using whatever methods you chose: outlines, graphic organizers, illustrations, timelines, etc.)

    How do you think these methods will help you keep studying and preparing for the final exam?

    • anything you found interesting that you didn't know before
    • any questions you have

    Then, attach your reading notes and submit your entry.


    Your instructor will grade this first set of notes to let you know how you've done before you move on to other notebook entries in History Notebook Part 2 and History Notebook Part 3.
