Americans were certain that a conflict like the Great War of 1919 could never happen again. International entanglements would surely never be as complex and deadly has they had been before the Great Depression and its New Deal Recovery. They did not realize that the Depression itself would again result in a European powder keg of desperate leaders bent on war and the quest for power.
