In February of this year, Managing Director Brad Ashwell and Project Manager Chris Lester represented Texas Tech at the University Landscape Managers Association (ULMA) Texas Meeting, a part of the Professional Grounds Management Society. This annual gathering brings together grounds maintenance leaders from various Texas schools to discuss ongoing projects and shared challenges.

Brad and Chris delivered a comprehensive presentation reviewing Texas Tech’s current irrigation initiatives. They highlighted common issues faced by all campuses, including water restrictions and environmental changes and shared strategies for adapting to these challenges. They also addressed the impact of external factors, including vendors and campus wildlife such as squirrels, which often damage irrigation systems by chewing on drip lines.

Chris emphasized Texas Tech Grounds' commitment to sustainability and cost-efficiency.

"Our goal is to save time, money, effort and water for the university," Chris said.

He introduced the team's latest initiative: testing a HydroPoint irrigation station. This advanced system monitors soil moisture, temperature and weather conditions to optimize watering schedules. Chris noted that while most watering is done at night, there is only a small window during the day when irrigation is possible.

Chris also praised the ULMA community for its support and the opportunity it provides to learn from other schools facing similar issues.

"The challenges Texas Tech faces are not unique to our campus," he said, underscoring the value of collaboration and shared knowledge within the association.
