Ear Tips

Feral Cat Ear Tagging Information on why we do it, what kinds are there, does it hurt, what should I do if I see an ear tipped cat and do I need to eartip my community cats

Why Do We Do It?

An eartip is the universal sign that a cat has been sterilized, spayed/neutered and vaccinated.

What Kinds Are There?

There are two kinds of eartips.

  • The first is where the upper 1/3 of the ear is removed straight across the top of the ear.
  • The second is a "v" notch, where the upper 1/3 of the ear is removed in a v shape.

Eartips are generally on the left ear, but can sometimes appear on the right ear as well.

Does It Hurt?

No, eartipping is performed by a licensed vet while under sedation at the time of spay/neuter..

What Should I Do If I See An Eartipped Cat?

If the cat appears to be healthy and well-fed, leave the cat where it is! It is in its home and is no longer able to reproduce. Most eartipped cats in Lubbock have devoted caretakers who generously provide them with food, water, care and shelter.

Do I Need to Eartip My Community Cat?

Yes! For the safety of any and all community cats, as well as any outdoor or indoor/outdoor kitties, an eartip is essential to their safety!
