Winter at Tech

Contest materials include:

A+ Computer Science
HEXCO
Maverick Productions
Math, Number Sense, Calculator Applications, and Science contests will be divided by both grade level and division.

Each school may enter up to four students in each Journalism event and four students in Ready Writing.

New Events
This year's invitational adds the following events:

History – Civil War
World Geography
Chess Puzzles
These events will count toward Sweepstakes. The goal is to encourage additional student participation in UIL academic competition.

 

Contest materials and awards will be mailed to the address provided on each school's registration form.

Step 1: Register
Submit your registration form with all participating students listed by Friday, Feb. 26, 2027, at 4 p.m.

Step 2: Receive Contest Materials
Once all contest materials have been received, Texas Tech will email participating schools copies of all tests and answer keys on Monday, March 1, 2027.

Step 3: Administer the Contests
Schools and coaches may administer the contests at their convenience.

Contest results must be submitted to jack.barton@ttu.edu no later than Monday, March 8, 2027, at 4 p.m.

Step 4: Submit Journalism and Ready Writing Entries
Journalism and Ready Writing entries should be emailed to Texas Tech.

Each page must include:

Student name
School
Event
Regional judges will evaluate these entries and determine award winners.

Step 5: Submit Scores
Texas Tech will provide official results forms for reporting contest scores.

Please submit only:

Contest scores
Completed results forms
Do not send completed tests (except where noted below). Schools are responsible for determining tie-breakers before submitting results.

Step 6: Submit Essays
Email the essay portions of the following events:

Current Events
Social Studies
Literary Criticism
Each page must include:

Student name
School
Event
Do not grade these essays. A Texas Tech judging panel will evaluate them.

Step 7: Do Not Send Tests
Only the following materials should be submitted to Texas Tech:

• Journalism entries
• Ready Writing entries
• Essays from Current Events, Social Studies, and Literary Criticism
• Contest score sheets
• Do not send completed Current Events, Social Studies, or Literary Criticism tests.

Step 8: Results and Awards
After all scores have been received and recorded, results will be posted in a shared Google Sheet. Participating schools will receive a QR code to access the results.

Contest materials, awards, and scholarship announcements will be mailed as soon as possible.

Each division will receive:

1st and 2nd Place Team Awards for each event
1st and 2nd Place Sweepstakes Awards

Scholarships

Texas Tech colleges and departments sponsor scholarships for outstanding senior competitors.

Edward E. Whitacre Jr. College of Engineering

• $1,000 to the top senior Calculator Applications score in each division
• $500 to the top senior Computer Science score in each division

Department of Mathematics & Statistics

• $500 to the top senior Number Sense score
• $500 to the top senior Mathematics score

College of Media & Communication

• $300 to the highest combined Journalism score in each division

Department of History

• $500 to the highest combined Current Events and Social Studies score
• $300 to the top combined History and World Geography score

Jerry S. Rawls College of Business

• $1,000 to the overall highest score
• $500 to the second-highest overall score

Department of English

• $300 to the highest overall Literary Criticism score
