At the 2022 Southern Weed Science Society (SWSS) Annual Meeting, PSS's own Delaney Foster and Peter Dotray were each recognized for their achievements and dedication to the field of weed science.
Foster was presented with the SWSS Outstanding Graduate Student Award and Dotray was honored with a SWSS Fellow Award.
Delaney Foster — Outstanding Graduate Student (MS)
The SWSS Outstanding Graduate Student Awards are given annually to graduate students (one at the MS level and one at the PhD level) who demonstrate exceptional performance in their studies and related weed science activities.
Foster obtained her master's degree in Plant and Soil Science with a concentration in crop protection under the direction of Peter Dotray. Her thesis was titled “Crop response, weed management systems, and tank mix partners with Isoxaflutole in HPPD tolerant cotton”.
During her time at Texas Tech, Foster was successful in many student competitions, from the university's 3MT Competition to national poster contests. She also served in leadership roles in the graduate student organizations for the Southern Weed Science Society and Weed Science Society of America.
Foster is currently pursuing her Ph.D. at the University of Tennessee, where she is studying auxin-resistant Palmer amaranth in west Tennessee.
Peter Dotray — Fellow Award
The SWSS Fellow Award is the highest honor the Society presents. It recognizes those members who have made significant contributions to the Southern Weed Science Society and advances in the discipline of weed science.
In addition to his role as the Rockwell Chair of Weed Science at Texas Tech, Dotray also serves as an Extension Weed Specialist in District 2, a 20-county area home to 3.5 million acres of cotton on the Texas Southern High Plains. His work includes teaching, conducting and authoring research, advising, serving on graduate committees, and presenting at seminars, professional conferences, and grower meetings.
Dotray has served as Proceedings Editor, CAST Representative, Board Member At-large, Vice President, President Elect, President, and Past President, and numerous other committees within the Southern Weed Science Society. He has received the SWSS Outstanding Young Weed Scientist Award and Outstanding Educator Award, and is a Fellow of the American Peanut Research and Education Society.
