Texas Tech University

I have health insurance. How do I use my health insurance at Student Health Services?

We are in network with most major commercial insurances.

If we are not in-network with your insurance, we we will go ahead and bill your insurance in case your insurance offers any kind of out-of-network benefits.

For patients with in-network insurance, Student Health considers all copays, deductibles, and coinsurance as covered by the Student Health and Wellness Fee. No additional charges will be charged to the student.

However, if your claim is denied by your insurance, then we will apply the 60-70% discounted rate to fees for the services you received and apply the charges to your Student Business Services fee statement.

How do I submit my insurance information?

To ensure you have coverage, it is necessary for you to provide your insurance information at the time you make an appointment. You can use the Insurance Record Upload Center to upload your insurance information before your appointment. Patients will have 48 hours after their appointment to submit their insurance information before they will be considered self-pay.

I use TRICARE Prime.

Student Health Services does accept TRICARE. It is up to the student to ensure the following for it to be accepted:

1. Have your primary care provider (PCP) changed to a Student Health Services Provider. If you do not know the name of your preferred provider please select: David S. Edwards, MD-Student Health

2. Call your primary care provider (PCP) and ask them to request an authorization for you to be seen at Student Health Services for either the visit or for the entire semester. Give your PCP the name David S. Edwards, MD.

This will need to be done before each semester to use your TRICARE Prime at Student Health Services.

If TRICARE denies the claim, the bill will be converted to self-pay and the charge will be billed to your Student Business Services fee statement.

My insurance is an HMO plan.

Student Health Services does accept HMO plans. It is up to the student to ensure the following for it to be accepted:

1. Have your primary care provider (PCP) changed to a Student Health Services Provider. If you do not know the name of your preferred provider please select: David S. Edwards, MD.

2. Call your primary care provider (PCP) and ask them to request an authorization for you to be seen at Student Health Services for either the visit or for the entire semester. Give your PCP the name Davis S. Edwards, MD.

If your HMO denies the claim, the bill will be converted to self-pay and the charge will be billed to your Student Business Services account.

What about international insurances?

Student Health Services does not accept international health insurances. Students that present this insurance will be considered to self-pay and fees will be charged on their Student Business Services fee statement.

Does my insurance cover Lab and Radiology services?

Laboratory and radiology services performed at Student Health Services will be billed in the same manner as a physician encounter (insurance or self-pay) and will receive the same financial benefits as all of our services.

Certain lab tests are not able to be processed at Student Health Services and must be sent to University Medical Center's lab for processing. All billing for labs sent to UMC is handled by UMC and will not receive the same financial benefit as if they were processed at Student Health. This means that if your insurance has a deductible or coinsurance, you should expect a bill from UMC.
