About the Conference
- What: InVeST is the International Veterinary Simulation in Teaching conference held at locations around the world. Past conferences have been in England, the Carribean, South Africa, Germany, and the United States. This conference brings together like-minded individuals with the latest developments in veterinary simulation and communications training. It is amazing to see all the ingenuity and thoughtfulness that goes into the development of new models for education!
- Activities: Snacks, lunch, and dinners are provided during the conference with events held at the Big Texan Restaurant and the Panhandle Plains Museum. Learn about the Comanche Indians, the weapons of the Old West, the iconic windmills, and visit a pioneer town. Visit Palo Duro Canyon, the 2nd largest canyon in the United States, located just 30 minutes south of Amarillo.
- When: October 17-19, 2025
- Where: Texas Tech University School of Veterinary Medicine in Amarillo
- 7671 Evans Drive, Amarillo, Texas 79106

Keynote Speakers:
Scott Crawford, MD, FACEP, FAWM, FSSH, CHSOS
Dr. Scott Crawford is Executive Director of the Training and Educational Center for Healthcare Simulation (TECHS) at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) El Paso. He is Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the Paul L. Foster School of Medicine at TTUHSC El Paso. He has presented both in the US and internationally on topics related to simulation audio/video design, debriefing, and operations. He has served as a reviewer and author for standards of best practice and conference presentation topics related to simulation and technology education. He is also Editor of the textbook Comprehensive Healthcare Simulation: Operations, Technology, and Innovative Practice.
His talk will be on “Simnovation across Disciplines”.
In this talk he will discuss how creativity can be enhanced by adding constraints. This presentation will share practical examples from his professional career about how technical, clinical, and pedagogical innovations were actualized as a result of imposed restrictions. He will discuss the design and innovation process that led to overcoming these limitations, and the design and enhancement process that resulted with the hope that attendees will adopt a design thinking and growth mindset.

Kent Hecker, PhD
Dr. Hecker is a Professor of Health Professions Education in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine with a joint appointment in the Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary, Canada. He is the inaugural Chief Assessment Officer for the International Council for Veterinary Assessment. Dr Hecker studies performance in health professions education in three areas: 1) Selection of applicants; 2) Assessment of student/trainee competency development across the health care continuum; and 3) The application of neuroimaging methods (functional magnetic resonance imaging [fMRI] and electroencephalography [EEG]) to assess learning, reasoning and decision making.
His talk, “Validity of a Model or Validation Evidence to Support the Use of a Model?” will examine the research steps necessary to gather validation evidence in support of using models for both low- and high-stakes decisions regarding student performance, as well as for publication purposes.

Kyle Johnson PhD, RN, CHSE, ANEF
Kyle Johnson is the Executive Director of the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center Simulation Program, a multi-site Society for Simulation in Healthcare accredited interprofessional simulation program in Teaching/Education and Assessment, with 7 sites extending from West Texas to the Dallas-FW Metroplex. Kyle also is a Professor in the School of Nursing and the Covenant Health Systems Endowed Chair in Simulation and Nursing Education. His program of research centers on best practices for learners in observer roles and the impact of debriefing in simulation based experiences. His research publications on the observer role and debriefing have been recognized as articles of influence to the simulation community by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare and he received the Debra Spunt Doctoral Research Award from the National League for Nursing. He most recently co-authored the newest revision of the Healthcare Simulation Standard of Best Practice: The Debriefing Process that will be published in 2025.
The title of his talk is called "Get off the Ladder! How to Establish Safe Containers for Learning in Simulation Prebriefing and Debriefing".
