Our institution is steadfast in its commitment to shaping the future of veterinary medicine. With two-thirds of our student body hailing from rural, agricultural, and sparsely populated regions of Texas and New Mexico, we proudly embrace the unique experiences and perspectives they bring. These students are not only rooted in the land but are also deeply connected to the communities they serve.

Their lived experiences in rural and regional environments equip them with invaluable insights into the challenges and opportunities of veterinary practice in these vital areas. As they move forward in their education, they will emerge as the next generation of leaders in veterinary medicine, advancing the health and well-being of animals, rural communities, and agricultural industries across Texas and beyond.

Funding Priorities

Student Success

Group of Veterinary Students

Our program is one of the most affordable in the country. Yet many of our students from underserved rural and regional communities are from moderate income families or are first-generation students. Scholarships enable access, affordability, and opportunity.

Scholarships provide the answer to the question, ‘How do I afford veterinary medical education?’ They enhance student success in the program. And scholarships lay the foundation of success after graduation. A scholarship today shapes the future of veterinary medicine in rural and regional communities.

Our vision is to provide scholarship support equal to 25% of the average tuition and fees. This requires we distribute approximately $2.5 million per year in scholarship funds. To achieve this transformative level of scholarship support, our goal is to build scholarship endowments that total $50 million.

Real-World, Experiential Learning

student working with practice partner

Our network of practice partners includes veterinarians from across rural and regional communities of Texas and New Mexico. This network continues to grow and flourish.

They are committed – and excited – to open their practices so students in their clinical year can perform real-world, hands-on experiential learning. Philanthropy helps us elevate the educational experience at these clinical sites in a way that is unique to our program.

From the very beginning, we worked hand in hand with these practicing veterinarians to design our program to prepare graduates for success in rural and regional communities. These practitioners are future employers of our students. They are very much our partners in our program.

Our practice partners are invested in our students’ success, and we are invested in their success. Together we will produce practice-ready veterinarians dedicated to the needs of rural and regional communities.

Pet Memorial Program

Cat and Dog

Pets are part of your family. They leave their paw and hoof prints on our hearts that last forever. The School of Veterinary Medicine’s Pet Memorial Program is one way veterinarians, pet owners, and friends of pet owners can memorialize the life of an animal who has left an amazing impact on the lives of others.

Donations to this fund will be used to support students who are in their final year of their veterinary program at the Texas Tech University School of Veterinary Medicine. During this year, our RaiderVets will perform hands-on clinical rotations in which they learn the trade from some of the best practitioners in the nation.

Mobile Unit

CARES Mobile Unit

Our new veterinary mobile unit called Community and Regional Engagement Service (CARES) allows us to grow our efforts in giving back to a region that has generously supported the school.

The CARES unit offers a remote base of operation for veterinary services provided by faculty, staff and students. It helps provide veterinary care to Meals on Wheels clients and the homeless population in Amarillo, assist spay and neuter programs at regional shelters and support regional disaster response.

It gives students unique opportunities to put the school’s purpose into practice by working with rural and regional communities. It also provides a real-world, experiential learning environment for students.

Dalton W. Horn Memorial Scholarship

Dalton William Horn was selected to be part of our inaugural class, but tragically lost his life in a car accident. He had a passion for the care of animals, especially large animals, and was thrilled to be a member of the inaugural class. Our hearts are broken for the pain his family is now going through.

Dalton was the type of student for which our School was founded, the type of student we have come together as a School to develop into a veterinarian. He was one of more than 700 students who started the application process and his attributes and life experiences mirrored our School’s mission, resulting in him being a top recruited candidate. We honor Dalton’s memory through this scholarship.
