CMLL

A Taste of the World

CMLL hosted “A Taste of the World” event for the Texas Tech advising community on February 10 in the CMLL Qualia Room and basement.  Approximately 50 academic advisors and program directors attended the one-hour event where they first learned of the vast language, culture, and academic offerings in the department.

TOTW event TOTW event

Bringing awareness of how languages and cultures are important in upholding the mission of Texas Tech was an important objective of the event.  One way was to share how the advising community shares the mission of Texas Tech in “preparing learners to be ethical leaders for a diverse and globally competitive workforce and its commitment “to enhancing the cultural and economic development of the state, nation and world.”

TOTW Event  TOTW Event

Advisors learned about faculty-led study abroad, dual, and double majoring opportunities, undergraduate certificates offered and community engagement opportunities for undergraduate language learners to put their skills into practice.  Each language program decorated a table, filled it with artifacts and informational materials for advisors.  Faculty were on hand to engage in conversations about their program and language could enhance the undergraduate students.  Language is alive and CMLL communicated this well throughout the event. Spanish Foundations Service-Learning Project by Noah Verboon, lecturer-Spanish

Over the past academic year, the Honor's sections of Spanish 1507, Spanish 2301 and Spanish 2302 have been participating in a new Service-Learning project. The goals of the project were to get the students in the program to use their Spanish skills outside of the classroom, to make connections from language learning to their careers, and to give back to the Lubbock community. In Spanish 1507 and Spanish 2301, the students ran an extra-curricular Spanish club in Westwind Elementary. For 7 weeks in the fall and 7 weeks in the spring, the students taught and practiced Spanish with the elementary school students. TTU students designed and created presentations, materials, and games for each week. The administrators at the school said their students were excited every week to have college kids working with them and were even going home to their parents telling them what they learned in Spanish Club.

TTU students reflected at the end of the project and said they were able to benefit from this project. For example, some said while they may not be working with kids in the future, they learned skills such as time management, teamwork, and communication. Brayden Peckham, an Honors student who participated over both semesters, wrote this:

Over the last two semesters I have had the privilege to work with Westwind Elementary School through a project with my Spanish class. My classmates and I have had the honor of teaching these third through fifth grader students the basics of Spanish. This project at first took place during students' lunch, and now has moved to a new after-school club. In the beginning, this was not easy. Simultaneously learning and teaching a foreign language proved to be quite a challenge. However, thanks to a lot of preparation and determination we carried on with this journey. Getting to walk alongside these kids who are students of a new language has given me a newfound sense of what it means to teach something foreign. In addition, it has allowed me to gain a better understanding of Spanish and some of the common application that I experience daily.

Taking on this service-learning project was one of the most important things I did as a first-year student at Texas Tech. I along with my classmates are incredibly grateful for the opportunity to give back to our community and to others who share this love for learning. Getting to grow in our own Spanish speaking ability whilst being able to instill this love in the hearts those we taught was an awesome experience. It has helped us grow as leaders and given a lot of insight into the behind the scenes of hands-on teaching. This project has only further instilled in me a love for Spanish and am excited to continue to pursue this journey.

In Spanish 2302 Honors, TTU students had a slightly different experience working in elementary schools. There is a teacher shortage in Texas and in Lubbock there is also a need for bilingual teachers. The goal in this class was to immerse TTU students in Spanish, directly assist Lubbock ISD, and to give TTU students insight to the Dual Language programs within Texas. TTU students went to local elementary schools and assisted teachers in their Dual Language classrooms. TTU students worked directly with the kids in both English and Spanish so that both they and the elementary students would be able to strengthen their language skills. TTU students said at the end of the semester that they felt they learned so much from the kids and gained confidence in communicating in Spanish. They also gained an appreciation for dual language programs, learned why it exists in Texas, the benefits of programs, and the necessity for teachers.

Noah Verboon extends a special thanks to the school administrators and teachers in Westwind Elementary and in the Lubbock ISD for participating in this project with Texas Tech University. He would like to thank Angela Pineda for teaching SPAN 1507 in the Fall of 2022 and helping pilot this project. He would also like to thank his students for being excellent representatives of TTU in the community.
