In the past year, Donna Brasher has been a leader in four important initiatives. She provided expert guidance and direction for the team that won grant funding from Raise Your Hand Texas – a program providing scholarships of up to $8000 per year to 12 of Tech's most promising students who are committed to the teaching profession. Second, she led an initiative originating through the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board to support and promote teacher preparation programs in the production of bilingual elementary teachers – one of the greatest shortage areas in the nation. Her efforts created opportunities for over 125 teacher candidates in our “Tech Teach Across Texas” program, boosting the success rate of TTU and the status of the institution in Texas. Third, she led efforts to engage three separate community college districts around the State to formulate, refine and implement a degree pathway for production of middle and secondary mathematics teachers. Finally, she single-handedly led efforts to recruit, support and implement teacher candidates to serve in rural, West Texas school districts that struggle with teacher recruitment. These examples are just a few of the ways Donna has demonstrated strong leadership that benefits students, the university, and the communities in which our teacher-candidates prepare and serve.
