Personal Information:

Derek Reed is a second year Horticulture Master student doing research in lavender production. He developed an interest in plants while competing in the Nursery and Landscaping CDE for the Marble Falls FFA chapter. Derek received a Bachelors in horticulture from Tarleton State University in Stephenville Texas. While in Stephenville, Derek worked at an Ace hardware garden center for four years, and was eventually promoted to managing the entire garden area before graduating. Once he graduated he went on to work for Brightview Landscaping in Irving, Texas doing landscaping and irrigation. After working for Brightview for a year and a half he decided to further his education at Texas Tech University. Derek now works for Russ Plowman as an Intro to Horticulture lab instructor. There he has learned both the joys and patience that comes with teaching and is now considering to further his education even farther so he may continue to teach. While teaching labs Derek is also in charge of making sure everything is ready and set up for the other Intro to Horticulture labs. In addition to these responsibility Derek assists in taking care of the trial beds. The first year of taking care of the trial beds Derek and another student Kolbie Tyler, planted everything at the green house trial beds on their own. That summer Derek and Kolbie took care of weeding, watering, and recording data for the trial beds. This Summer Derek assisted in planting the trial beds and laying drip lines. He will continue to assist with watering and weeding for the duration of the trials.
